Why I Said Yes to a Spontaneous Trip to Cuba

Why I Said Yes to a Spontaneous Trip to Cuba

I needed a change. No exceptions. A few weeks ago, a friend asked if I wanted to go to Cuba on a total whim, and instead of taking the safe route, I packed my bags. The stakes were high because traveling to a place with limited connectivity means you have to rely entirely on your instincts and your creative drive to capture the moment.

It was real. Completely authentic. I found myself wandering through the vibrant streets of Havana, framing shots of classic cars and local smiles as the warm Caribbean sun hit my lens.

The challenge? Capturing the soul of a place in transition. Cuba moves at its own pace, and to truly document it, you have to be patient. I relied heavily on my handheld camera setup, shooting with a fast prime lens to create a beautiful shallow depth of field that emphasizes the incredible expressions of the people I met. I kept my shutter speed tight and my composition loose, letting the natural rhythm of the city dictate the narrative.

The result? Pure storytelling. From the historic architecture to the spontaneous moments shared with locals, the footage captures a raw look at a beautiful culture.

Life is all about stories. It would have been easy to say no, to stay comfortable, and to avoid the unknown. But if you want to grow as a creator and as a person, you have to push your limits, step out of your comfort zone, and do something you have never done before.
